
A better specification starts with better questions—not just a lower price per kilogram.
Two quotations can both say “PQQ” and still describe different purchasing requirements. Before comparing prices, make sure you are comparing the same material, the same test basis and the same documentation package.
Your six-point PQQ ingredient sourcing checklist
- Identity: What exactly is the ingredient?
- Measurement: What does the assay mean?
- Traceability: How is it made and controlled?
- Batch quality: Do the documents match?
- Application: Does it fit the intended use?
- Supply: Can the supplier deliver consistently?
1. What exactly is the ingredient?
PQQ stands for pyrroloquinoline quinone. PQQ disodium salt is the specific material described in FDA’s response to GRAS Notice 641. That document concerns a named supplier and specified uses; it is not a universal specification for every product sold as PQQ. [1]
Ask for the full ingredient name and chemical form on the quotation, specification and certificate of analysis (COA). If the ingredient is a blend, ask what else it contains and how the PQQ content is expressed. Do not treat a shorthand product name as a complete purchasing specification.
Ask your supplier: “Please confirm the exact chemical form, composition and identification method for the grade you are quoting.”
2. What does the assay actually measure?
A percentage needs a definition. Confirm the analytical method, the substance being measured, and whether the result is expressed on an as-is, dry or other defined basis. Ask how water is measured and whether it affects the reported result.
A chromatographic area percentage should not automatically be treated as a mass-content result. Your quality team should assess the method, calibration and reporting basis before deciding that two certificates are comparable.
Ask your supplier: “Can you provide the assay method, reporting basis and a representative chromatogram where available?”

3. How is it made—and what is controlled?
Ask for the manufacturing route and a process overview. A route label alone does not tell you how purification, process-related impurities or batch traceability are managed.
Keep the discussion practical: which critical characteristics are controlled, which tests are performed at release, and how will changes to the process or specification be communicated? Request additional information through your supplier-qualification process where needed.
Ask your supplier: “Which quality controls support this grade, and what is your change-notification procedure?”
4. Do the quality documents match the batch?
A specification defines acceptance limits. A batch COA records results against them. Both should identify the same grade, and the delivered material should be traceable to the batch documentation.
Agree on relevant identity, assay, water, impurity, elemental-contaminant and microbiological requirements. Residual-solvent testing may also be relevant to the manufacturing process. Set limits with your quality team for the intended market, rather than copying a generic checklist unchanged.
Ask your supplier: “Please provide a recent batch COA, current specification and the supporting test methods for our review.”

5. Does it fit the application and destination market?
Ingredient selection and finished-product performance are separate questions. Define the intended format, processing conditions, packaging and storage requirements. Then evaluate the sample in your own formulation instead of assuming that raw-material data predict finished-product stability.
Review market suitability separately. FDA’s response to GRAS Notice 641 is specific to the notifier’s described material and intended conditions of use; the letter also says the agency did not evaluate support for labeling claims. Do not turn a supplier’s regulatory reference into an unqualified “FDA-approved” claim. [1]
Ask your supplier: “What evidence supports this exact grade for our intended use, and what still needs independent review?”
6. Can the supplier deliver consistently?
Price matters, but so do representative samples, packaging, lead time, shelf-life documentation and the handling of out-of-specification results. Agree these points before the first commercial purchase.
Record the approved specification and required documents in the purchase order. A sample approval is most useful when the commercial shipment can be checked against the same requirements.
Ask your supplier: “What will accompany each shipment, and how will you handle a result that does not meet our agreed specification?”
